Climate change and CCS increase the water vulnerability of China's thermoelectric power fleet

چکیده

Large numbers of China's thermal power plants are in water-stressed regions. Changes the availability water resources due to climate change may impact vulnerability regional and national electricity generation. Here we explore this for coal-fired units (CPUs) as generation-type most exposed risk. We find many already experiencing scarcity 120–176 GW capacity will be at least one additional month per year 2030s. In absence carbon capture storage (CCS) useable CPUs increase slightly, mainly an northern China under all scenarios except RCP8.5. However, CCS systems have been identified essential roadmap neutrality their use represents high requirements. The addition significantly exacerbates vulnerability, leading further useable-capacity reductions 7.4–7.7%. assess several adaptations that early retirement is effective, with interregional transmission also playing important mitigating role. Our work highlights need improved awareness planning.

Water resources, climate change and human vulnerability

It is well recognised today that climate change is affecting the Earth’s physical and biological systems, and is expected to do so on forthcoming decadal to century timescales. A need exists for useable predictions of the impacts associated with such climate change, and the likely societal responses to these. This must also be seen in the context of other drivers of global change, and be presen...

On the Vulnerability of Water Limited Ecosystems to Climate Change

Society is facing growing environmental problems that require new research efforts to understand the way ecosystems operate and survive, and their mutual relationships with the hydrologic cycle. In this respect, ecohydrology suggests a renewed interdisciplinary approach that aims to provide a better comprehension of the effects of climatic changes on terrestrial ecosystems. With this aim, a cou...

Global water resources: vulnerability from climate change and population growth.

The future adequacy of freshwater resources is difficult to assess, owing to a complex and rapidly changing geography of water supply and use. Numerical experiments combining climate model outputs, water budgets, and socioeconomic information along digitized river networks demonstrate that (i) a large proportion of the world's population is currently experiencing water stress and (ii) rising wa...

Accepted Article Climate Variability and Vulnerability to Climate Change: a Review Running Head: Climate Variability and Vulnerability Climate Variability and Vulnerability to Climate Change: a Review

The focus of the great majority of climate change impact studies is on changes in mean climate. In terms of climate model output, these changes are more robust than changes in climate variability. By concentrating on changes in climate means, the full impacts of climate change on biological and human systems are probably being seriously underestimated. Here we briefly review the possible impact...
